Ribbon skirts and their teachings have been around for generations. A garment worn by Indigenous women across Turtle Island, ribbon skirts were traditionally worn to special occasions or ceremonies. ”For Indigenous peoples, the Ribbon Skirt represents our own personal reclamation. It represents reclaiming identity, and wearing that identity proudly.” an excerpt from The Ribbon Skirt Project. Today, there is a movement to wear your ribbons skirts any day and anywhere.
Led by Shauna McAllister (Cree-Métis) from AlbertaVista Creations and with the guidance of expert seamstress, Jade Kinrade of The Neon Needle, you learn how to make your own ribbon skirt. From measuring and cutting to sewing and serging you will be provided ALL materials (including fabric and ribbons), tools, and instruction over two half-day workshops (Nov 18 & 25)!
To be respectful of the history and cultural importance of ribbon skirts please note that they should only be made and worn by Indigenous Peoples. If you are non-Indigenous please take this into consideration if you’re thinking about registering.
